We surveyed 1500+ Australian grocery shoppers to figure out their habits.

Before we started The Fill Market we wanted to find out how Aussies shopped for their everyday staples, so we can help more people access waste-less groceries.

We were curious: did you choose to shop at bulk food stores? How often did you shop online?

Here's the top reasons people choose to shop at bulk food refill stores.

1. People want to eat healthier foods.

Bulk food stores are great for this!

Many bulk stores choose organic and spray-free where possible, and buy from local Australian farmers meaning the food is be fresher (less travel!) and more nutrient dense.

We already know we eat with our eyes, and when there are so many beautiful, colourful wholefoods in front of us it would surely encourage us to try them out. Surely we're not the only ones who think bulk food stores are beautiful..?!

2. Shoppers prefer the range of options.

We're finding more and more grocery items are being added to refill stores -and we're here for it! We've found things like dried citrus slices (for drinks and decorating!), cornflakes, lasagne sheets, even choose-your-own eggs for your BYO carton!

There's no doubt the range will continue to grow as the demand for local, waste-free food, personal care and cleaning products continues to grow.

3. We want to cut packaging waste.

Hooray for closed-loop solutions! Shopping from bulk foods retailers is a really simple way to cut a whole heap of your household's waste - I'm sure you'd be surprised how little goes into your landfill and recycling bins when you choose to refill the jars, bottles and containers you already own.

This is a fundamental reason why The Fill Market exists -we had found so many local brands doing great things, we just had to share them to make waste-free shopping more accessible!

4. Shoppers want local & organic foods & products.

The Fill Market is choc-full of small Australian businesses already helping us access better staples, with much of it grown and produced right here at home.

Want to shop extra local to you? Try searching your city, town or state in the directory to find waste-free retailers near you to cut your shipping km's even more!
